I couldn’t have been happier as I stumbled downstairs around 9:30am (I live in Southern California) to begin the first of many lazy Sundays laying on my couch to watch some football. It has been in the 80s & 90s for the past several weeks, but today it finally felt a little “fall-ish” and that made everything even better…I didn’t feel bad for not heading to the beach and I didn’t have to blast my AC.
But enough about me, let’s cover the Top 4 Sunday Football Stories…
1. Brandon Stokley’s 87-yard Catch
This was just absolutely insane. I was watching the New York Jets @ Houston Texans game and this game came on right when it ended. The Denver Broncos had the ball at the 13-yard line with basically no chance at winning when Orton aired out this half-assed attempt at a comeback.
By the way, this was Stokley’s only catch of the game, which accounted for over 1/3 of the Broncos’ passing yards on the day. My favorite part was how smart he was for running parallel to the goal-line to take some extra time of the clock.
Stokley is probably most remembered as the “other receiver” in Indianapolis with Marvin Harrison & Reggie Wayne, but he can now add this to his resume.
2. Drew Brees Throws 6 TDs
As if throwing for 5,069 yards & 34 TDs last year was not enough, Brees went on to set a New Orleands Saints team record and an NFL Opening Day record for TD passes with six yesterday against the NCAA Division-II Detroit Lions. He also tossed for 358 yards helping seven different Saints players register 30 or more receiving yards.
I know this is ridiculous (especially since they play the Philadelphia Eagles next week), but at this pace he will throw for 5,728 yards & 96 TDs. Pretty stoked he is on my fantasy team…The Patron Shots.
3. Adrian Peterson Runs for 180 yards & 3 TDs
One of the few “old school backs” that carries the whole load (what are you talking about?), AP carried the ball 25 times for 180 yards & 3 TDs for the Minnesota Vikings. I just laughed when I saw these numbers. I mean, what else would you expect? He is ridiculous. This is only his third year in the NFL. I really hope he can keep doing this for another 5+ years.
His 64-yard TD run against the Cleveland Browns looked like some high school highlight where the running back is just that guy that developed early. Wow!
Since I did it for Brees, here is AP’s pace…2,880 yards & 48 TDs.
4. Mark Sanchez & the New York Jets are 1-0
Sanchez truly looked like a veteran out there whipping the ball all over the place for the Jets. Of his 18 completions, 12 of them were on third downs, which accounted for 191 of his 272 yards passing. That is what won the game for them. He kept so many drives alive and made the Texans defend against the pass, which opened up the running game for Thomas Jones.
One game. One win. He looked like the real deal on Sunday!
